Meet Hal

This is him before his hair cut.

I came home from a summer trip to Texas with the desire to reduce the number of animals we have and simplify!  The 13 goats, 3 alpacas, 1 cat, and 20+ chickens take time with daily watering, feeding, and tending.  Did I forget to mention hoof trimming?  I think you get the point - they are a lot of work.

However, when I learned that Smokey, our beloved cat, for the last 3 years was never seen again after one weekend Olivia and Paul left for Lagoon, I knew that we needed another cat.  We have so many mice that another cat was a must.

So the very next day after arriving home, we headed off to the animal shelter.  It just happened to be free dog and cat day, what could be better?  So we came home with Hal, a seven year old Border Collie.  He has been the perfect addition to our family because he is so kind, gentle, and obedient.  I was worried about a dog killing chickens, but he doesn't give them any attention.  His favorite thing is to go for rides in the van.

Chicken in a Bag

Meet Fuzzball, a Poland chicken, who is experiencing a hurt leg.  I found her on the ground just laying there so I knew something was wrong (once they get a hurt leg, the other hens and roosters seem to team up on the hurt chicken until they it's live is ended) .  I scooped her up and brought her in the house where I gave her food and water every hour.  I knew I couldn't hold her all day, so I rigged up this little bag for her to hang in. I propped a chair with a little pillow for her head - yes, she found it very comfortable and took a nap!  I thought I was a genius.

However, I knew she couldn't stay in this bag much longer than an afternoon.  I put her outside in a flower bed away from the other chickens with food and water as she rested on the ground with very little mobility.  By this afternoon (the next day) she was dead.  It seems that we have gone through several chickens already.  This always breaks Olivia's fragile, loving, heart.  I am trying to convince her that we need to get rid of the three roosters.  Roosters are always bad news, I have learned this from experience.
