In the Process of Moving

Boys in the U haul, Porter working at the house, Corbin helped with the tiling, and a mountain of foodstorage in the garage (but that's not all of it).

Paul and I have been busy trying to pack and move during this Christmas Break.  It has been hectic.  We made our first load on 12/23 and then two loads that took most of the day on 12/24! Then with additional help we were able to make two more loads and carry it into the house.

I wish I would have taken photos of the work in progress.  My mom and baby brother, Chase (doesn't look like a baby at 6'5" tall), came up for a couple days and worked their tails off.  Tisha also joined in the fun, along with the Richael ladies!  Thank you everyone for your help - we couldn't have done it without you.

Christmas 2010

We had a wonderful Christmas even though we are in the flurry of packing and moving.

Everyone received aprons for Christmas so now we have our own!
A note from Santa!

Paul reads us the story, I Believe in Santa Claus, every year.
My favorite gift this year was the book, Miracle on the Mall,  which retells the Restoring Honor Rally held in Washington DC on 8/28 that Tonya and I attended.

Santa left a Foosball table in our home-to-be!
The girls each left a note and treat for Santa, they are looking at this note in return thanking them for the goodies.
Paul pulled a joke on me and wrapped up the unique cake stand that I tried leaving in the Richael's van.

Build-a-bears, Webkinz, clothes, toys, and a cowboy hat!

Gingerbread Houses

Our family has been making homemade gingerbread houses for years.  This is our third year making them with the Richael family!  Even though the houses look the same to begin with, they all end up to be very unique, colorful, and delicious (that's if you pick your candy off your house, like me).

No Soliciting Sign Doesn't Apply to Salesman

Today a young  man in his 20's knocked on the door.  Instantly I could see that he was a "solicitor".  I opened the door and he quickly started into his quick presentation about what he was selling.  He was trying to sell milk - that's as far as he got.  I listened to his one sentence and then I pointed to the "No Soliciting" sign on my window.  He responded by saying "I am not soliciting" and then tried to continue with his sales pitch.  I quickly interrupted him and said this is soliciting and then kindly shut the door!

Oh, these guys make my crazyWhy can't they read?  I guess they do read, but they don't think it applies to them.  Well who does it apply to?

The Mirriam-Webster dictionary defines "solicit" as:
(transitive verb)
1a : to make petition to : entreat
b : to approach with a request or plea <solicited Congress for funding>
2: to urge (as one's cause) strongly
3a : to entice or lure especially into evil
b : to proposition (someone) especially as or in the character of a prostitute
4: to try to obtain by usually urgent requests or pleas <solicited donations>

I thought my sign would solve all my door salesman problems, but it hasn't.  Maybe next time I will have a little discussion about what the word "solicit" means.  WATCH OUT - do not approach my door with something to sell.

Smokey Update

We took Smokey for two trips out to our next home last Saturday.  He wasn't too sure about things. I doubt he has every been for a card ride before.  He meowed and meowed the first trip and was more calm for the second.

I was just wondering during the past couple days when Smokey was going to bring us a Christmas gift.  And lo and behold, this morning when I opened the door I found a dead mouse laying on its back.  I guess Smokey still loves us.

What Shall We Give?

"To catch the real meaning of the spirit of Christmas, we need only drop the last syllable and it becomes the spirit of Christ."

"If we are to have the very best Christmas ever, we must reach out for the carpenter's hand.  With every step we take in His foot steps, we abandon a doubt and gain a truth."

Staying in the Valley

I don't think I was clear in the last post about our change of plans.  We are staying put here in the valley, just going a few miles south of where we live now... same city!

Our Plans Changed

Our family plans have changed in a major way over the course of the last month - actually exactly one month from today.  It was Wednesday, Nov. 10th and I attended a roll making class taught by our Stake Provident Living Specialist.  While I was driving to her home, I noticed a home for sale.  It caught my eye, so after the class I stopped by and grabbed a brochure.  Later that night my real estate agent took me to that home and another that I found.

The thought of even looking at these homes seemed weird to me because Paul and I had been pushing for our home plans to be submitted to the city  - and they were to be submitted that very same afternoon.  I had to call the builder and ask him to wait until I sorted all of this out.  You have to know that I designed the perfect home for our family over the course of the last year!  I had poured my heart and soul into this home, trying to think of everything from every angle (basement, noise control, food storage room and more, beautiful kitchen, etc.).  It was a layout that would work for our family because it was a combination of two homes that I liked, one that we had built before.  I had also bought two nice big light fixtures and a 48" chef's cooktop for the new home.  We were anxious to get building and into the new home in the spring.

We purchased a building lot over a year ago in a nearby neighborhood. It is in the same ward and school boundaries - and still close to the gym.  Now what was I thinking?  I had some hesitations during this whole process because of our uncertain economy and with all the current events.  Things seem to be changing and coming un-glued so quickly.  Was it smart to build the home of our dreams during this time?

After realizing that the two homes I toured were not the answer, I continued to search and pray for some clear guidance.  That is when we were prompted to take a weekend trip to my hometown.  We went there not knowing how or what we would learn.  We just trusted that the Lord knows what is best for our family and that He would make that known to us.  After a great weekend with Mom and Keith, the answer came Sunday morning during Mandy Baker's talk in Sacrament meeting.

She spoke about the changes that their family was making with a move around the corner and their reasons for doing so.  Her talk was based on Elder Uchtdorf's talk, "Things That Matter Most."  He said, "it is good advice to slow down a little, steady the course, and focus on the essentials when experiencing adverse conditions".  Our country is experiencing adverse conditions, so we realized that we needed to cut back our spending on a home that far exceeds our needs and create opportunities for the kids to work and pull together. At the same time, we hoped to have space for fruit trees, chickens, a larger garden and perhaps a couple cows.

Within a couple days of our weekend trip, we found the house that answered all of our questions and confusion.  The home sits on 10 acres and will provide enough room for all our family (still has a basement with smaller food storage room) where they each have their own bedroom.  It also has a greenhouse, a chicken coop in need of some repair, some out buildings for storage, a wood stove (which I have wanted for emergencies), an over-grown pasture in the front, a large alfalfa field in the back, and around 10 different fruit trees.  The home is in great shape and was recently remodeled - it will just take some tweaking to make it feel like our own.

After walking through the home, we made an offer that was accepted two days later.  We closed on the property this week and now it is ours.  I know this comes as a shock to everyone, but even more of a shock to me because this is not what I had envisioned for our family.  I know that we are being led by the hand of the Lord and that this is a direct answer.  Now that we have received our answer, we are moving forward in faith in this adventure.  Although we are not moving until the end of the school semester, we are already saddened by the thought of leaving our great ward. We started putting down our roots because we thought we would be here for a very long time.  This would be an even more difficult process if I lost contact with my friends! I am truly grateful to have made some good friends and I hope that you keep in touch.

Sometimes our prayers are answered in ways beyond our imagination!

Holiday Dessert Recipes toTry - 15 more days until Christmas!

I thought this jello looked interesting - I've never seen anything like this. Glass Block Holiday Jello recipe from Our Best Bites -here.

I just bought some wide mouth half pint jars to make pie-in-a-jar.  Now I can also make these Peppermint Fudge Cupcakes in a Jar (also from Our Best Bites).

If you know me, you know that I LOVE pecan pie.  So when I came across this recipe at "Anissa's Kitchen" for Pecan Pie Bars I was thrilled!
Don't these Candy Cane Kiss Cookies from the "Recipe Girl" look fantastic -they would be very fun for a cookie exchange.

This (get ready for the long name) Sour Cream Chocolate Cake with Peanut Butter Frosting and Choco-Peanut Butter Glaze  at "A Bountiful Kitchen" has to be a hit.  As I read through the list of ingredients, it sounds to-die-for.  I love chocolate and peanut butter together.  In fact, it was the last flavor of shake that I ate at the A.C. Drive In.

This time of year I love biscotti with my hot chocolate (we drink lots of this in our family).   Here is a recipe for Lemon Pistachio Biscotti from another fabulous recipe blog, "And Now for Something Completely Delicious".

When I found this Upside Down German Chocolate Cake recipe at "See Jane Cook", it sounded like the very cake that Kim made for my birthday.  It was so delicious and moist! It only calls for six ingredients and looks easy.

Oh, so many new recipes to try!  This Pistachio and Cranberry White Chocolate Bark  from the "Brown Eyed Baker" looks so festive and delicious.

I bought a couple jars of Nutella at Costco and have been wondering what I can do with it, besides lick it from a spoon.  This Pumpkin Nutella Swirl Bread from "Real Mom Kitchen" looks delicious!  This recipe can also be made into muffins, my kids might just love this.

I just made the this bread this morning into small muffins (a little bigger than the mini-muffins).  They were absolutely delicious!  I baked this small size for 12 1/2 minutes.

The Hunger Games

I just finished this book over the last day and a half - the fastest book for me yet (reading puts me to sleep - I think it stems from my college days).  It was a fascinating book that kept me on the edge of my seat.  Watch the trailer (movie is coming in 2012) to get an idea what it's all about.

Have you read the book?  What did you think?

Cute Wreath with Rolled Fabric Tutorial - 16 days 'til Christmas

I think this is an adorable wreath with the rolled fabric flowers.  I have been wanting to do this since our Relief Society's Fabulous Friday (like Super Saturday - a craft night) but I wasn't able to take any classes because I was busy helping with three.  At Our Best Bites there is a great tutorial for making the rolled flowers.  I have seen these flowers on headbands, on scriptures bags, practically anywhere - they are a great accessory!

Vivian Plans a Family Party

Vivian worked hard to plan a family party, which finally was carried out Monday night after a short FHE.  A week before the party she wrote everyone notes with a invite to the party.  She is such a sweetie - she loves to write nice little notes to everyone and give people prizes.

This is a picture of my two bags which contained the prizes shown on the bed :  a Christmas ornament, an over-sized pencil, a plastic trophy, and some candy.
This is our reminder note.

Here is a note that she wrote to me recently.  The part she wrote about the "fall colors and warm hues" is so cute because it actually comes from a nice note that Paul wrote to me (which is still hanging up in our master bathroom - that's where Vivian has seen it).

"A Date Which Will Live in Infamy"

Today marks 69 years since the attack on Pearl Harbor.  As I read an article in my local paper, I remembered how I felt when I visited Pearl Harbor almost two years ago.  I marvel at our military and the great sacrifice that many men and women of our great country give so that we might be safe at home.  I have a deeper love and respect for all our service men and women, as I begin to understand what price they pay for our freedom and liberty.  I had an opportunity to catch a glimpse of this sacrifice when I toured the USS Arizona Memorial and the museum.

Tara and I at the USS Arizona Memorial - it was a windy day so don't mind the crazy hair.

The USS Arizona Memorial is built over the remains of the sunken battleship USS Arizona, the final resting place for many of the 1,177 crewmen killed on December 7, 1941 when their ship was bombed by Japanese Naval Forces. This loss of life represents over half of the Americans killed during the worst naval disaster in American history.  For more information about Pearl Harbor, click here.

TIffani Standing by the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument

By Presidential Proclamation, President George Bush, authorized the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument on December 5, 2008. The national monument focuses on the events leading up to Pearl Harbor through to the Peace Treaty in Tokyo Bay—with the emphasis on the historical events of World War II in the Pacific Theater and its impacts on the mainland.

I Regret Not Saying Thank You

Yesterday I was walking through the grocery store when I walked past a man wearing a Vietnam Vet hat.  As I passed, I thought to myself that I should turn around and thank him for his service...but I regret to say that I didn't take that opportunity.

After shopping I came home and watched a movie (while putting groceries away, folding laundry and any other menial chore I could think of) from Netflix called "Rescue Dawn".  Little did I know that it was about a Vietnam Vet who was shot down in his aircraft and imprisoned.  It was an amazing story of survival and overcoming terrible hardships.  At one point in the movie, I had tears in my eyes as I realized that this could be the story of many who serve our country.  At the end of the movie, I learned that is was actually the story of a real man named Dieter Dengler.

At the dinner table, I told the family about my experience and my regret.  I encourage everyone, including myself, to thank the men and women who serve our country.  Shake their hand and simply say "thank you."

In a "million-to-one shot," U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Eugene Deatrick spotted Dieter waving and—within 24 hours of dying, according to doctors—was soon lifted from the jungle. Two months later, Dieter was well enough to hold a televised press conference and testify before a Congressional committee.

Awarded the Navy Cross, Dieter left the Navy in February 1968. Vowing to never be hungry again, he bought and operated a German-style restaurant on Mount Tamalpais near San Francisco. In a house he built next to it, he hid a large supply of food staples under the kitchen floorboards. After selling his restaurant, Dieter become an airline pilot and, in the late 1970s, made a return to Laos on a POW fact-finding mission. Diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS) in 2000, Dieter died on February 7, 2001. He was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. (Here is a link to his story - don't read it if you are going to watch the movie).
